Artist in Residence at Royal Ascot (2024)

"Drawing from observation is an emotional response to what I see, and allows the possibility to tap into the magic that resides within our sense of sight: to make a picture which contains the subject depicted, while at the same time executing it in such a way as to offer many other allusive possibilities. I am interested in exploring the potential that a slight departure from straightforward realism can offer: to think in new ways, and dream into the image."

Michelle Cioccoloni is an artist of British and Italian heritage. She graduated from the Royal Drawing School in 2013, and has been Artist in Residence at Museo del Prado in Madrid, at Oskar Kokoschka's School of Seeing in Salzburg, Austria and at Hafod Estate, National Trust Wales. This year, as Artist in Residence at Ascot, drawing behind the scenes, she is creating a series of drawings that distill the multifaceted nature of horse racing.
